Dear Old Town Baking Company Customers,

We are so grateful for you and the outpouring love to our business and our family.

When we were notified of the offensive nature of one of our products, we immediately decided to reach out to the Native American community here in the Inland Empire and Southern California. We are so honored to be working hand in hand with our local community that is so gracious in their desire to educate with respect and love.

We have been actively addressing this issue since the moment it has come to our attention and we wanted to share one of the letters that we sent to our local tribes.

Good Afternoon,

I wanted to come to you with absolute respect and love for the Native American community in Inland Empire and throughout Southern California.

We are a family owned bakery that operates in Rancho Cucamonga. We have been in business for 15 years. Our recipes mostly come from a long line of our ancestry and family members who fostered the love of baking in their homes.

It has come to our attention this weekend that an old recipe that came from my father in laws (the owner of our bakery) grandmother who was born on the Oconaluftee Reservation in North Carolina has a deeply offensive name. The name of the bread is Squaw Bread.

We have always known this word to mean "woman". My father in law remembers his grandfather using the term in a loving and respectful way and perfected the recipe as a tribute to the Native American culture. We were shocked as we learned of the offensive nature of the word for the first time and are heartbroken and so sad that we would unknowingly have a name of one of our products that could be offensive to the Native American community.

We are meeting as a family business to discuss this matter and determine the best way to move forward. We would love to have your support and any information on the subject that you would be willing to share. We would also be grateful for any suggestions that you are willing to make. We would like to extend a deep apology if anyone has ever been offended by the name of our bread. We wish to walk hand in hand with you as we go forward.

Sincerely,

Stacey Bishop
